A GREAT STORY

The great challenges of the future - Ecology and the Environment

Renewable energies project

Aras de los Olmos aims to become the first municipality in Spain to be self-sufficient in renewable energies through an innovative system that combines four energy sources (solar, wind, hydro, and biomass).

The idea is based on the construction of two reservoirs at different heights so that a wind turbine – or, where appropriate, the power of biomass or photovoltaic – rises and then lets the water fall from one to the other, generating a continuous energy-producing cycle. The designed system also contributes to keeping forests clean and combating problems such as slurry. The project is complemented by the social nature of the initiative, as residents will be able to become cooperative members of the new municipal energy production company.

A milestone in the use of renewable energies and sustainable development.
